      Background InformationEMX1 and EMX2 are human homologs to the Drosophila developmental genes empty spiracles, and are specifically expressed in the developing telencephalic cortex. During the process of proliferation, migration, differentiation, and maturation, it has been reported that, while EMX2 is expressed in the dorsal telencephalon and small diencephalic regions, EMX1 expression is exclusively confined to pyramidal neurons of the dorsal telencephalon and remains localized in most cells of the cerebral cortex. Since EMX1 is expressed in both proliferating and differentiating neurons in the developing embryonic brain, it has also been shown to be a reliable marker of the embryonic pyramidal cell lineages.
