Tryptophan hydroxylase 1 (TPH1). TPH1 is found in the pineal and gut. Recognizes the ~51 kDa TPH1 protein in pineal and P815 mastocytoma cells by Western blot. No reactivity with recombinant TPH2.
This gene encodes a member of the pterin-dependent aromatic acid hydroxylase family. The encoded protein catalyzes the first and rate limiting step in the biosynthesis of serotonin, an important hormone and neurotransmitter. The human genome contains two related tryptophan hydroxylases, one on chromosome 11p15-p14 and one on chromosome 12q21. This gene is expressed predominantly in the gut, pineal gland, spleen, and thymus.
COFACTOR: Fe(2+) ion. SIZE: 444 amino acids; 50985 Da SUBUNIT: Multimer of identical subunits. TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Isoform 2 seems to be less widely expressed than isoform 1.
