DescriptionMouse monoclonal antibody purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation. Recognizes the ~60 kDa bacterial chaperonin GroEL protein.
BackgroundGroEL functions in prokaryotic protein folding and assembly in an ATP-dependent manner with another protein of the groE operon, GroES. In vitro, groE gene products have been demonstrated to modulate folding of a number of eukaryotic proteins. GroEL is essential for morphogenesis of bacteriophage lambda, where it mediates assembly of phage head and tail protein complexes. GroEL homologs have been identified in plant chloroplasts and in the mitochondria of a variety of eukaryotes (Hsp60), where in conjunction with Hsp70, they participate in the folding and assembly of proteins translocated into the matrix. Recently a chaperone protein analogous to GroEL was identified in the eukaryotic cytosol, TCP-1, raising the possibility of Hsp60 and Hsp70 cooperation in the maturation of cytosolic proteins.
