OverviewThe SMC™ Human Phospho-Tau (T181) High Sensitivity Immunoassay Kit contains all reagents required to perform the assay. This assay takes advantage of a standard immunoassay workflow configured in a standard plate format. Assay protocols are similar to existing sandwich ELISA methods with two key differences: 1) Elution buffer disrupts the sandwich, separating the labeled detection antibody for quantification. 2) The Erenna® and SMCxPRO™ immunoassay systems detect analytes using Single Molecule Counting (SMC™) technology.
Background InformationThe human tau family of microtubule-associated neuronal proteins has been rigorously studied in the context of normal and aberrant neurobiology. While typically involved in the stability of axonal microtubules, tau can also play a role in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), where hyperphosphorylation of the protein and the resulting misfolding and aggregation can negatively impact neural communication. Today, the threonine-181 (T181) residue of tau is a key phosphorylation site that is examined for its role as an AD biomarker due to it being present in 95% of AD cases.
