General description
Tau is a microtubule-associated protein predominantly found in neurons, where it stabilizes microtubules and supports axonal structure and function. By promoting microtubule assembly, tau facilitates intracellular transport and ensures effective communication between neurons. In neurological disorders, particularly neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer′s disease, tau undergoes hyperphosphorylation, leading to its misfolding and aggregation into neurofibrillary tangles. These tangles disrupt microtubule stability, impair neuronal function, and contribute to cell death and cognitive decline.
Elevated tau levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) often indicate ongoing neurodegeneration. Tau also plays a role in neuroinflammation; its presence can activate glial cells, which exacerbate inflammatory responses and promote further neuronal injury. Overall, tau is crucial for maintaining neuronal health, and its dysregulation is central to the pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative disorders.
