General description

Human Thyroglobulin (Tg) is a 660 kDa, dimeric protein produced by and used entirely within the thyroid gland. Human Thyroglobin is used by the thyroid gland to produce the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyryonine. Patients with Hashimoto′s thyroiditis or Graves′ disease, frequently develop antibodies against human Thyroglobulin. Thryoglobulin levels in the blood can be used as a tumor marker for certain kinds of thyroid cancer and in Graves′ disease.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Thyroglobulin has been shown to induce expression of platelet activating factor in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells which is found elevated in some patients with thyroid disease.

The thyroglobulin (TG) protein is essential to thyroid hormone synthesis, plays a vital role in the regulation of metabolism, development and growth and serves as intraglandular iodine storage. Its architecture is conserved among vertebrates. Synthesis of triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine

Thyroglobulin (Tg) measurement is a major tool for the follow-up of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) patients; however, in patients who do not undergo radioactive iodine (RAI) ablation, normal ultrasensitive Tg levels measured under levothyroxine treatment (usTg/l-T4) are not well defined.
