Immune Response and Sepsis Biomarkers Assays

While an immune response is critical for maintaining homeostasis, a hyper-reaction to infection, whether bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic, can result in an uncontrolled inflammatory response called sepsis. This hyper-reaction to infection interrupts homeostasis through an uninhibited inflammatory response, including upregulation of sepsis biomarkers (glucocorticoids and catecholamines, mediators of the humoral immune response, and pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1α, IL-6 and TNFα) as well as increased apoptosis of lymphoid organs, leading to immune suppression. Severe sepsis or SIRS (systemic inflammatory response syndrome) can cause septic shock, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and death.
