General description

Human Interferon alpha-2 (IFNa2) is a cytokine belonging to the IFN family exhibiting antiviral, antitumor and antiproliferative effects on immune response. IFNa2 is secreted by viral infected cells and acts to inhibit viral infection. It has been shown to play a role in autoimmune diseases such as lupus and myositis. The mechanisms of action underlying the pathogenic role that IFNa and IFNß play in autoimmunity is not well understood but elucidating their role will lead to a better understanding of these cytokines in chronic inflammation and immunity.

Although IFN-α2 was detectable in rat, pig, non-human primate, canine, and feline samples, the assay has not been verified for these species.
