General description

Synaptosomal-associated protein 25 (SNAP-25) plays a crucial role in synaptic transmission in the nervous system. As a component of the SNARE complex, it facilitates the fusion of synaptic vesicles with the presynaptic membrane, enabling the release of neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft. By promoting efficient neurotransmitter release, SNAP-25 is essential for proper neuronal communication and signaling.

SNAP-25 has been implicated in various conditions, including Alzheimer′s disease, schizophrenia, and multiple sclerosis. Abnormalities in SNAP-25 expression or function can disrupt synaptic transmission, leading to impaired neuronal communication and contributing to cognitive decline and other symptoms associated with these disorders. Alterations in SNAP-25 levels often correlate with disease severity, highlighting its importance in neuroinflammation and synaptic dysfunction. Understanding the role of SNAP-25 in these processes can help identify potential therapeutic targets and inform strategies aimed at restoring synaptic function and improving outcomes for neurological disorders.

Other Notes

Although SNAP-25 was detectable in non-human primate (rhesus macaque and cynomolgus monkey), feline, rat, mouse, canine samples, the assay has not been verified for these species.
