General description

PAX6はPAX遺伝子の中で最も研究されており、文献を通じて、眼やその他の感覚器官、特定の神経組織や表皮組織、およびその他の相同構造（通常は外胚葉組織に由来）の発生のための「マスターコントロール」遺伝子として示されています。この転写因子は、異所性の眼の発現を特異的に誘導するのに使用されることで最もよく知られており、ヒトではヘテロ接合変異体が無虹彩などの広範な眼の異常を生じるため、医学的に重要です。この遺伝子は、キイロショウジョウバエ遺伝子prdの多くのヒトホモログの1つであるペアードボックス遺伝子6をコードしています。この遺伝子ファミリーの特徴である保存されたペアードボックスドメインに加えて、コードされるタンパク質にはホメオボックスドメインも含まれています。いずれのドメインもDNAに結合し、遺伝子転写の調節因子として機能することが知られています。この遺伝子は、発生中の神経系と発生中の眼に発現しています。この遺伝子の変異は、眼の疾患である無虹彩とペータース異常を引き起こすことが知られています。
