General description
ネスチンは、大型の中間径フィラメントタンパク質（クラスVI）であり、発生中に発現され、また、筋腱・神経筋接合部で発現されています。ネスチンの発現は限定されており、通常はE18までに消失します。ネスチンは適切な神経マーカーであると考えられていますが、最近の研究で、内皮細胞などの他の細胞型にもネスチンの発現が認められています（Folia Biologica, 44(5):155, 1998）。ネスチンによって、最も原始的な神経上皮を識別できますが、他の多くの胚組織も識別されるため、CNSに特異的というわけではありません。ネスチンの発現は、ほぼすべてのGBM（多形神経膠芽腫）と多くのメラノーマ（原発性および転移性）で認められますが、転移性癌では認められません。
この抗ネスチン抗体の実測MWは220kDaであり、抗体は、一部の細胞および／または処理で、260kDaのバンドとして認められることがあります。
