トリス（2-カルボキシエチル）ホスフィン（TCEP）は、水性溶液中でジスルフィド結合を開裂するためにきわめて有効です。TCEPは、他のトリアルキルホスフィン（トリブチルホスフィン）とは異なり、水に溶解し無臭です。また2-メルカプトエタノールよりも低毒性です。このような利点があるため、TCEPは他の還元剤よりも優れています。

トリス（2-カルボキシエチル）ホスフィン（TCEP）は、SDS-PAGE、質量分析、システイン特異的タグの標識、システイン含有化合物の修飾など、いくつかの下流用途に使用できます。TCEPはタンパク質サンプルの酸化を防ぐことから、酵素活性を保存するために役立つ有効なバッファー成分となります。TCEPは、グルタチオンの還元および測定に使用されています。

Biochem/physiol Actions

トリス（2-カルボキシエチル）ホスフィン塩酸塩溶液は、ジスルフィド結合を還元し、タンパク質の他の官能基を無変化で残します。
非メルカプタン還元剤として、TCEPはチオール含有化合物に固有の毒性を回避します。TCEPは、ボツリヌス神経毒B重鎖／軽鎖複合体を破壊でき、最終的には毒素の毒性を破壊できます。ボツリヌス神経毒B重鎖／軽鎖複合体は単一のジスルフィド結合で結び付けられており毒素のエンドサイトーシスを引き起こします。ジスルフィド結合サブユニットは多くの毒素（リシン、ヘビ毒、すべてのBoNT血清型など）に特徴的であるため、TCEPは毒素投与時の予防的救済に有用と考えられます。
