脊髄における抑制性神経伝達物質であり、NMDAレセプターのアロステリック調節因子です。
グリシンは非必須アミノ酸です。細胞膜を通るカルシウムの流入は、グリシンゲート開閉チャンネルにより媒介されます。グリシンは、ポルフィリン、プリンおよびセリンの合成に関与しています。また、これはNMDA（N-メチル-D-アスパラギン酸）受容体への結合において、グルタミン酸の競合的アゴニストとしても働きます。急速に増殖するがん細胞では、アミノ酸需要の増加により、グリシン合成が増加する可能性があります。
脊髄における抑制性神経伝達物質、NMDA受容体のアロステリック調節因子。
