General description

セロトニンはすべての動物にみられる普遍的な分子であり、中枢および末梢神経系（CAN/PNS）に多様な作用を示します。セロトニンはホルモンやマイトジェンとして作用します。セロトニンは、脳に存在する軸索終末で産生されます。活動電位はセロトニンの放出を誘導し、セロトニンはシナプス間隙で拡散して、シナプス後受容体を刺激します。セロトニンは、成長、呼吸、体温調節、内分泌、心臓血管、消化管機能において重要な役割を果たしています。また、睡眠覚醒サイクル、性交、気分、記憶、攻撃性、疼痛感受性、学習、認知などの感覚知覚行動にも関与しています。セロトニンは、統合失調症、神経性無食欲症、うつ病などのいくつかの精神障害と、強迫性障害、パニック発作、社交恐怖症などのさまざまな不安障害に影響を及ぼします。セロトニン濃度の変動は、衝動に関連する障害や性格（薬物乱用、ギャンブル、注意欠陥障害、強迫観念、攻撃性など）と関連しています。
