インターロイキン-6（IL-6）は、二重鎖RNAで刺激された細胞の培養液中に見出された多機能性のタンパク質です。IL-6は、感染や損傷の後に起こる反応に直接関与していることが知られており、急性期反応の制御においてIL-1やTNF-αと同様に重要であることが証明されています。IL-6は、線維芽細胞、活性化T細胞、活性化単球またはマクロファージ、そして内皮細胞によって産生されることが報告されています。線維芽細胞、骨髄系前駆細胞、T細胞、B細胞、および肝細胞に作用します。IL-6は、その多数の同意語（形質細胞腫増殖因子（PCT-GF）、インターフェロンβ2（IFN-β2）、単球由来ヒトB細胞成長因子、B細胞刺激因子（BSF-2）、肝細胞刺激因子（HSF）、インターロイキンハイブリドーマ/形質細胞腫-1（IL-HP1））が示すように、複数の効果を誘導します。さらに、IL-6は、Tリンパ球の増殖においてIL-2と相互作用します。IL-6はまた、多分化造血前駆細胞におけるIL-3の増殖効果を増強します。
