ウマ骨格筋由来ミオグロビンは、153のアミノ酸残基を含む単鎖のヘムタンパク質です。ジスルフィド結合や、フリーの-SH基を持っていません。ミオグロビンには、無秩序な(ランダム)コイル領域と結合している、さまざまな大きさの右巻きらせん領域が8つあります。
ミオグロビンは、ほぼ最大の酸素要求量における骨格筋酸素供給に重要であり、PO2濃度をミトコンドリア機能の維持に必要な濃度以上に保つことによって、酸素欠乏を予防します。
