General description
Sucrose can be used as a carbon source in microbial growth media. It provides a source of energy and carbon for many bacteria and supports their growth. Sucrose is used to produce several types of media for the isolation and cultivation of various bacteria, fungi, and yeasts. Sucrose is commonly used in media for the identification and differentiation of various bacteria that grow on sucrose-containing media. Chromogenic agar media, such as MacConkey agar media with sucrose, are also commonly used in the identification of bacterial strains. Sucrose can also be used in specialized media for the isolation and culture of certain organisms, such as lactic acid bacteria, which are commonly used in the food industry. Additionally, sucrose can serve as a differential reagent in media formulations, such as in the TSI test (triple sugar iron test), which differentiates various Enterobacteriaceae bacteria based on their ability to ferment various types of sugars.
Application
Sucrose is commonly used as an ingredient in many microbial culture media for the growth and identification of bacteria, yeasts and molds from various pharmaceutical, environmental, food and beverage samples.
