Application
Sodium bicarbonate solution has been used:
- as a component of Hanks′ buffered salt solution (HBSS) and recording medium for culturing of tissue explants from rats or mice
- as a component of Dulbecco′s modified Eagle′s medium (DMEM) to culture mice tissue explants
- as a component of Minimum Essential Media (MEM) to study the cytotoxicity against human colorectal adenocarcinoma cells and mammary gland adenocarcinoma
- to prepare collagen mix droplets for 3D collagen sprouting assay
- to prepare collagen matrix for rat epidermal keratinocyte (REK) organotypic culture
General description
Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCo3) is a commonly used alkaline buffering agent(5) in laboratories. The addition of this buffer to the cell culture medium aids in maintaining the appropriate pH by using the carbon dioxide present in the incubator. In addition to its buffering properties, Sodium bicarbonate also acts as a source of sodium and aids in sodium gluconate synthesis during the fermentation process.
Preparation Note
Prepared in cell culture grade water.
