General description
The Ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCHL1) protein plays a critical role in the ubiquitin-proteasome system, which is essential for protein degradation and turnover in cells. As a deubiquitinating enzyme, UCHL1 removes ubiquitin molecules from proteins, regulating their stability and function. It is predominantly expressed in neurons and is vital for maintaining cellular homeostasis by modulating protein degradation pathways. UCHL1 has been implicated in conditions such as Alzheimer′s disease, Parkinson′s disease, and Huntington′s disease.
Abnormalities in UCHL1 expression or function can lead to the accumulation of misfolded or damaged proteins, contributing to neuronal stress and cell death. Additionally, UCHL1 is associated with neuroinflammation, as its dysregulation can exacerbate inflammatory responses in the brain. Understanding UCHL1′s role in these processes is crucial for developing therapeutic strategies aimed at enhancing protein degradation pathways and mitigating the effects of neurodegeneration and inflammation in neurological disorders.
