General description

Latrunculin B is a macrocyclic toxin, which is produced by Latruncula magnifica.

Application

Latrunculin B from Latruncula magnifica has been used for actin depolymerisation in various experiments. It has also been used as a component in bone marrow-derived dendritic cell (BMDC) complete medium, to study the formation of tubules from phagosomes in dendritic cells.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Latrunculin B inhibits actin polymerization in vitro. Latrunculin B disrupts microfilament-mediated processes.

Actin filaments are instrumental in driving processes such as migration, cytokinesis and endocytosis and provide cells with mechanical support. During angiogenesis, actin-rich filopodia protrusions have been proposed to drive endothelial tip cell functions by translating guidance cues into directional migration
